Simple, flexible, and functional August 28, 2010 Onepoorguy (Sonoran Desert) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This system is not fancy, but it works. You can assemble it almost any way you want. If you want four rows you can assemble it that way, or 1 row, or whatever. The pieces fit tightly, so you will need a hammer. A rubber mallet is ideal (won't damage the wood), but a normal hammer will work if you use a thick magazine to protect the wood. You can also use glue, or not. The unit offers great flexibility in how you put it together, allowing you to make it fit whatever your space is.
While I haven't done so, you could stain and seal the raw wood if you want to use it to display. In my case I assembled it to fit under the bottom shelf in our pantry.
It's a good unit, has a large capacity, and is totally customizable. I can recommend this unit unreservedly.
Everything I Wanted and More August 19, 2010 STG (Litchfield Park, AZ USA) WOW! This is one heavy duty and superbly functional wine rack! The octagonal pieces drilled for the pegs are smooth and heavy, and machined perfectly. The pegs all fit snugly and assembly required a good sized plastic "dead blow" hammer to seat them evenly. Once you get into the rhythm, assembly becomes a simple repetition of a few basic steps.
But, the effort is well worth it. Once assembled, the rack is heavy, solid, and sturdy and I did not see the need for any glue. The final shape you build it is limited only by your imagination, and the enclosed instructions show a "stepped" shape that would fit under a set of stairs, and various other options. The rack fits various sized and shaped bottles securely, and the depth seems just perfect to cradle the bottles securely. They slip into their slots with a silken finality that only genuine wood on glass can provide. I dislike metal racks specifically for the reason that the bottles "clink" whenever you rack or remove them.
So, if you are looking for a handsome, secure wine storage solution, this is the one for you. if you want to order more than one, you can combine the kits into one large one or any combination you choose. I'm ordering my second one today!
Wine Rack Purchase August 11, 2010 Scooter Not as easy to put together as you would think when you take it out of the box. This could be done by one person but is a lot easier when two people do it. Pretty Sturdy. I was able to put a 60 (10 bottles across and 6 high) unit in the space I had a kit and part of another. Very happy with the purchase.
Functional August 4, 2010 Naphtali Hoffman (ROCHESTER, NY) The rack works fine, went together in a reasonable amount of time, and looks good. What more can you ask for?
Tragic waste of time! June 23, 2010 E. Mcrae (OR USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
What a tragic waste of time!
I want the three hours I spent assembling and then deconstructing this thing back. The reviewer who called it tinker toys was being too generous.
The product assembly is pretty straight forward; dowels and bars that you stick together. The problem lies in the fact that the dowels are too small for the holes drilled in the bars that are supposed to hold the whole thing together. About half of them were too small to even stay in the holes while holding the bar up to put the whole thing together. A secondary issue is that holes are not drilled uniformly into the bars...several of them are seriously off center creating a bit of a lean to the whole rack. The directions say that if there was concern about stability, they suggest taking each of the dowels on the horizontal stretches and crimping the end with a pair of pliers then applying glue (not included) prior to inserting into the bar. I can't even imagine how much longer that process would have taken.
The final indicator that this thing wasn't going to work should have been when I had to find my husband's tie down straps to hold the rack together before putting wine bottles into it. But I was not deterred! After spending 2 hours to put the thing together I was motivated to get our wine put away.
Tie down racks in place, and rack shoved into the corner to stabilize it, I started unloading our wine. Once case spread out over the two conjoined racks and I was feeling good. The second case didn't go so smoothly. After I put the second bottle from the second case in I heard dowels hit the floor. Two of them. The third bottle sent another dowel to the floor and part of the rack started to separate. One bottle hit the floor and that was enough.
After I removed the tie down straps the demolition was inadvertently underway. The right side of the rack separated immediately. After putting the entire dowel system together using a rubber mallet, most of the dowels pulled free with very little effort. It took less than 45 minutes to pull apart the 2 racks and repackage them in the original boxes.
Save your time and spend a little more money for something that works.
