5 out of 5 stars Good pH Tester   July 24, 2010
Jason Samuel Gootee
After doing a good bit of research I decided to purchase this pH tester based on the low price. The calibration solutions and storage solutions that are nessicary for proper maintainance of this tester are inexpensive. When you do a lot of pH testing with solutions that are a constant temperature, ie: room temperature solutions instead of boiling or almost frozen solutions, it is very accurate and saves time when compared to using pH drops and money over the long term when compared to using strips. It is very accurate once calibrated. I have recommended this model to others. Amazon shipped this product to me and it arrived 4 days earlier than they had estimated.

3 out of 5 stars A real pain to use   April 15, 2010

I bought this Hanna pH tester because I wanted to easily test my soil pH without having to mix it into a set of little vials, add solutions, and then analyze the color. Well, I should have done more research, because this pH tester requires so many solutions -- storage solution, buffer solution, and solutions that are high or low pH-specific -- that it becomes a major production. If the solutions came with the unit, it wouldn't have been so bad, but tracking down all the necessary supplies ended up being more expensive than the tester itself.

Although the device does indeed work, it's not a purchase I'd recommend for the casual user. For the scientist or individual who does a lot of pH testing (say, in a pool), this is probably a five-star product, but for those who just want to take a reading now and then, it gets one star from me, not because it doesn't work (it does) but because the effort simply isn't worth it. For instant, no-fuss soil pH reading, try Luster Leaf 1818 Rapitest Mini 4-in-1 Soil Tester.

Was not pleased that had to place an extra order for calibration solutions. Should have specified that up front.

I have had many PH meters in my day and most have been Hanna. Great company in the past and they didn't disappoint with this product. Works exceptionally well for what it is. Highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, seems accurate   January 22, 2010

This is the first ph tester that I have ever used. Works good, seems accurate. I did have to calibrate it by one point when I took it out of the box. Be careful of the top where the on/off switch is at. I accidentally popped it off and the wire connecting to the battery pack broke, a little bit of soldering took care of that. The only way you can get the top back in place is to remove the screw and slide the inside out from the case. The instructions fail to mention that point.
