Product Description Lodge, the world's leader in cast-iron cookware, crafts this revolutionary Dutch oven that is preseasoned so it's ready to cook right out of the box. Designed to replicate the all-encompassing heat of an oven on the stovetop, Dutch ovens are ideal for meat-and-vegetable dishes such as savory pulled pork or chicken cacciatore. The 5- and 7-quart capacity is perfect for family-sized servings and a champ for baking cornbread, producing a perfectly crispy exterior and light, moist interior. The loop handles make the simple-to-clean pan easy to maneuver on the stovetop, in the oven or over the campfire. Made in the USA.
Lodge Logic's preseasoning process penetrates the metal's pores thoroughly and uniformly, so it looks and performs better than traditional home seasoning. You still get the even heating, superior heat retention, and inherently stick-resistant finish that has made cast-iron cookware a favorite of professional chefs. Backed by legendary performance and durability, Lodge has crafted cast-iron products since 1896.

Perfect Bread Oven July 26, 2010 Mpls Photos I own many cast iron pans... Griswold, Le Creuset and Lodge and I love them all. For those who have issues with cast iron...Each type of pan has it's use and when you use a pan for things it was not intended for you will probably have issues. I purchased this 5 quart pre-seasoned dutch oven to bake bread using the book "My Bread" by Jim Lahey. This has worked so well that I have purchased many of these dutch ovens and given them as gifts to fellow bread bakers. Everyone who has used this dutch oven for baking bread will tell you that this the best thing to ever happen to them in the world of home baking. This was reviewed with five stars because it does exactly what I want and need it to do. It will last for generations and generations. Don't forget to pass on the "My Bread" bread book with the inheritance. Just a side note... If you like to bake more than one loaf of bread at a time, a standard oven will hold two of these dutch ovens at one time. You can keep one loaf and make new friends with the other.
God Bless and happy baking :)
Cheaper substitute for the 12 inch Chicken Fryer July 6, 2010 Logical (Heartland) I wanted the 12 inch Lodge chicken fryer, but this dutch oven
is a lot cheaper plus free shipping.
The sides are one inch higer than the skillet.
The dutch oven is a lot easier to move about or slide off of the burner
in case the temperature starts getting too high.
Chicken should be pan fried at 305 to 315 degrees F.
The starting temp (around 360 deg) depends really on how much chicken you are
going to place inside the pot. Typically 3 chicken breast or six drumsticks.
If the bottom is over crowded then you will have to start at a higher temp.
If you only place a couple of pieces then you will have to start at say 340 deg F.
Bottom Line:
The more chicken you put into the fryer the lower the temp will go.
You want it to go to 310 degrees farenheit.
Higher than that and the center will not cook fully before the outside darkens too much.

The above info is if the lid is NOT USED, but with a splatter screen
BIG - not suitable size for no-knead bread June 25, 2010 Lillith (USA) 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I followed the famous NYT recipe for no-knead bread and bought this pot because it said to get a 6-8 qt pot. Big mistake. It's far too big, and you end up with a flat loaf of inconvenient size & shape (the bread is fine, but the shape is a big deal). If you have a small family, it's not suitable for anything else either - much too big for cooking dinner.
So now I've had to sell it on for half the price and buy a 4-qt pot instead. I'm now using 'Kneadlessly simple' , and that book specifies a pot no bigger than 4 qt for a good size loaf. I can see why!
Other than that, no problems with seasoning that my amateur eye could discern. The bread didn't stick at all. Oiled it when I used it and let it cool after use before scrubbing with water and brush. Dried it promptly. That was all. Looking forward to my 4-qt pot so I can make interesting pot breads!
Oh - the 'oveglove' is great for handling it at a high temperature (such as you need for no-knead bread). Don't try to get by with pot holders and towels, it is much too hot and heavy for that.
Great buy, and asset to every kitchen! June 19, 2010 L (USA) You really can't beat the price of this dutch oven especially if you have prime! We had been looking at dutch ovens for a while but were uneasy at the thought of dropping $200+ for one of those fancy schmancy ones. We use ours all the time for steak, hamburgers and hot dogs- we're slowing branching out into other foods but already it was worth the price just for awesome burgers and steaks.
