i've owned several whirley-pops in the past and for 2009 christmas i bought one for all my family because whirley pop made great popcorn. unfortuanately, whirley pop has gone to the plastic gear and aluminum pot.
aluminum pot is ok, but if your a cook like me.. nothing works like stainless.
plastic gear.... i bought 12 of these for my family members and had 2 extra... i went through both of them in about 3 weeks due to the plastic gear breaking teeth off.
go for the back to basics popcorn popper... metal gear... lid is a little tricky... but it makes great popcorn, has a stainless pot... and doesn't break.

I've had more popcorn since purchasing my Whirley-Pop Stovetop popcorn popper, than I have had in years! It tastes good, and it doesn't feel as if I'm eating processed chemicals the way I do when I eat microwave popcorn.
In minutes I can pop up a large batch and drizzle a little REAL butter over it and sprinkle on a bit of salt and have a big bowl of seriously fresh popcorn just like you USED to have as a kid before technology came along and ruined all of the best foods by making them faster and giving them a really long shelf life!
I would have given it five stars, but for the tiny flaw in design that allows for a kernel of corn to nearly always get trapped under the arm of the popper and burn on the bottom of the pan as it is turning.
This is a great product and a lot of fun to use. It makes terrific popcorn (especially when you buy decent popcorn to put in it) and I highly recommend it.

This popper does just what it's supposed to, it pops good popcorn. My kids really enjoy turning the little crank. I put the burner on medium, not high and I don't think there are ever any unpopped kernels in the botton of the pan. I also don't immerse the pot in water, I just wipe the inside out with a damp kitchen cloth.

I had a popper like this one that I gave to my granddaughter, then had trouble finding it until I looked on Amazon. Great popper - beats Microwave by a mile. This popper also cleans up nicely. It came when I expected it and in good shipping condition.

I'm a huge fan of making popcorn on the stove -- the popcorn tastes so much better than the microwave version. However, the big pot I had been using to make my daily treat was starting to look a bit scorched, so I started to look around at the different popcorn poppers available. Growing up, I had an old-school electric popper that was quite a workhorse and made very good popcorn -- but I couldn't find anything like that out there. Then I saw this whirley-pop. I thought it was a quirky looking thing, but the reviews were positive, and it didn't require an electrical outlet, so I decided to try. Unfortunately, my first batch was a bit disappointing -- the popcorn was a bit soft, not crunchy, and reminded me of air-popped popcorn. However, I continued to experiment w/the amount of oil and the heat setting, and now I'm able to pop up a delicious-tasting, crunchy batch in less than 5 minutes. The crank contraption seems a bit gimmicky (I sometimes still shake my whirley-pop even though the instructions say not to), and because the gear parts are plastic, seems prone to breakage. And the pot itself is thin and flimsy. Even worse, I still get unpopped kernels. After several months of near-daily use, I still believe that popcorn made in a regular pot is much better than the whirley-pop -- however, I continue to use my whirley-pop because I have yet to replace the big pot I was originally using.
